Bodies Exhibit Tucson: Why would anyone want to see that?

I've spent this summer protesting Premier Exhibitions Bodies Exhibition in my favorite town: Tucson, Arizona. I've talked a small number of people out of going to this exhibit based on the fact that Premier rents the "unclaimed" bodies from China for $25 million per year then tours them around the world for $20-$35 depending on where you are. I've seen medical students from Tucson Beauty College, Don Mackie and Apollo Colleges, which unlike the University of Arizona don't have access to donated cadavers.

Most people do not read the flyer and I'm trying to think why when faced with the lack of consent that people would still go into the exhibit. This story has been reported on 20/20, Todd Akin's actions, and more recently Seattle City Council ban. The people who are still attending here are the reasons I can think of:

They already paid to get in. Many of the people who approach the exhibit already bought tickets online. This is tough to combat since in Tucson, they have already spent $22 per ticket.
They can't imagine the government would allow an unethical exhibit.
They think since its legal according to Chinese law, they think its acceptable. However, laws do not dictate morality. For example, in the 1700 and 1800's it was illegal in the United States to help run away slaves. Saudi Arabia still criminalizes women who drive cars! But most people would not think those laws are acceptable based on their own enlightened morality.
Racism. I'm hesitant to use this one, but I think its out there. The bodies are all Chinese and since Tucson doesn't have a large Asian population and its always easy for humans to dehumanize people who are different from themselves.
They think its educational. While it might be, many unethical experiments have advanced human scientific understanding, especially in the fields of psychology and biology. This does not make it right ethically.

Boycott Bodies Exhibition Tucson

Since May 2010, Premier Exhibitions has been showing Chinese Corpses in their "Bodies Exhibition" at the Rialto Building downtown Tucson. There are many alarming issues with the exhibit, but the most glaring is Premier's lack of proof that the bodies gave their consent. The government of China has been known to cause the disappearance of political prisoners and Premier can not prove the bodies aren't executed prisoners.

Need further evidence: 20/20 reported the same thing in 2008

National Public Radio also reported on this issue in 2006

And more recently the State of Hawaii has banned any exhibit which can't prove the origins of their bodies.

Please do not support this exhibit. If you really want to see the insides of these corpses just look at them on youtube, rather than paying the $22 admission charge.

Other things to consider:

Would people be upset if the bodies were unclaimed victims of Hurricane Katrina? There are 43 or so such bodies still unclaimed.

Would people be upset if this was an exhibit of euthanized dogs and cats from the County animal shelter?

Would people be upset if they traveled to Mexico City and saw an exhibit of American corpses playing soccer or hitting pinatas? (This exhibit shows Chinese people playing football and basketball)

Really old episodes

I found two really old episodes of the Fireside Chat on Geoff's Myspace videos. I downloaded them as .flv files. I didn't want to buy a conversion program so I converted them to DVD files, then back to .AVI so I could change the ending music to something that was pre-copyrights. After about 2 hours of hard labor by my computer, the videos are finished. That means I now own 2 episodes and 1 3 minute clip of my show from the 1990's. Ah, how I miss those simpler times.

Show Day - September 26, 2009.
Its the afternoon before the big show and I'm working on the intro slideshow and listening to Blues Explosion. My mind is all over the place, territorial quarters, watery diarrhea and for some reason, wolf shirts.

I'm fascinated with the wolf shirt. I've seen them worn around Tucson, but also Los Angeles and San Francisco. Its a black shirt with regal looking wolves looking at you. A simple search for "wolf shirt" turned up the following. But it also found a Steve Jobs photo shop image.

As if the wolf shirt wearing people weren't American enough (many of them sport mullets), many wolf shirt designs contain the American Flag also. All I can say is that I'm fascinated by these shirts and the people who wear them.

Now we are talking FOAM!!!

Besides http://www.accesstucson.org, my favorite website is http://faceoffagainst.me . This site is run by former Access Tucson member and LA socialite, Geoff Gardner. It fills my two goals in life: watching videos and trashing talking. I have been posting unique FOAM videos since 2009 and enjoy every minute of it. Now if we could just get some more members to the site, it would finally mean alot when I say "IN YOUR FACE SUCKA!"

I've decided not to update Mrs. Pac-Man in Tucson. There are a lot of possibilities for that, but not much time to make the videos. Maybe I will return at a later date.

From now on, I will enter information about Tucson and specifically: Access Tucson, our beloved public access television studio. I have hosted a show called the "Fireside Chat" for the past 11.5 years. To be honest I wish I had named it a different name because there are many other shows with the same name. Of course I ripped that name off in the first place so I shouldn't complain.

I really wish I could go back in time, but I can't, so onward to the future! The future of Access Tucson!!!
